Since late September I've been working with Panasonic LUMIX as one of their UK Brand Ambassadors. It's taken me a few weeks to really get used to using a camera with 4K capabilities, but after a busy month I'm finally getting to grips with the LUMIX LX100. You can read my introduction to 4K Photography here.
First I had a go at using the camera to document everyday life; be that when I'm grabbing coffee, catching up with friends, making cocktails or playing the guitar. But since those first few attempts I seem to have caught a buzz for using animals as my main subject. First we started playing around with Chole in the back garden, just to see what we could capture - it quickly became clear that the pooch was digging 4K as much as us! She's a natural, and I'll definitely be looking to capture more moments with that one.
I want to capture those natural, everyday moments that we can sometimes miss with regular photography. And that's the beauty of 4K Photo.

I've found myself headed down to the seafront more often too. It one of the only natural environment I can capture nature in our local area. Over the next few month I'm planning to explore some of our country's national parks, but for now Blackpool seafront is our direct access to nature (be that mixed with a lot of soggy chips, roller coasters and fancy dress...although they sound like good subjects too!).
So far I've found the camera really easy to use, but there's a few things that I'm still trying to work on. For example, I've not got fully to grips with the subject tracking system; this function lets you select a subject on the screen, then the camera follows it, keeping it in focus throughout filming. I used it for capturing the seagull above, shot-wise it turned out really well but I tried to shoot another bunch of seagulls and I kinda lost my groove. More practice needed!
On to another day, and I spent a
good few hours looking for interesting subjects and testing out various
settings (mainly the different focusing + tracking options). I stood and watched this chap + his dog for around 15 minutes, capturing some really lovely moments between the two. I'd loved to have got a few more close-ups of the dog, so that's on my to-do list this month.
4K Photo is really starting to put an extra spark into my love of photography, and making me see things from a different perspective. It's pushing me to try new techniques and search for subjects that I wouldn't have considered in the past. It does take a little more thought than I'm used to, but so far I'm really pleased with the results. So, where shall I take the LUMIX 4K next? Maybe it's time to take the LUMIX on a proper road trip...
Love the photos Mat! looking forward to seeing the snaps of the road trip x

The quality is incredible, isn't it? That seagull looks like it's about to fly out of my screen!
ReplyDeleteWe love our Lumix. Awesome photos, too!
ReplyDeleteI feel like you should take it to some place with a lot of movement like a dance performance or a light show! Does it take photo and video at the same time?

So you're able to extract single image frames from the video, which are super hi quailty. That's how I achieved all the images above.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see your progression with the camera dude! I can't believe how good Lumix 4K is, the clarity is amazing.

It's an interesting bit of kit. I really want to capture some car or something like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks Valerie!
ReplyDeletehow amazing! the photos are lovely!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane, I'm pleased to.
ReplyDeleteI'd find it tricky to use any other camera brand now I think. Which do you use?
ReplyDeleteThey are some such great captures, especially seagull ones. I have really enjoyed your photography recently & you kept getting better at it :)

Thanks Hannah, I'm enjoying it, but it's still tricky to get used to.
ReplyDeleteThank so much Gabi, I'm really enjoying using it as I haven't really used animals and nature as a subject before. It's not too expensive in the UK actually, around £350. Not too sure about US.
ReplyDeleteJumping right out! I'm glad they seem to action-packed, as I'm happt too. Thanks Becky.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, some very good shots!
ReplyDeleteI've always been interested in getting a Lumix, something about a small camera that shoots good photography gets me and after reading your review I think i'll invest in one for Christmas. Great shots Matt, I love your work. You should maybe take the camera to a park on a Sunday, I know that would be fun.

Cheers Daisy. Loving experimenting with it.
ReplyDeleteThey're small but very powerful. I have two by Lumix, but above is the LX100. If you're interested I've now posted a more thorough review, which went up on Friday.
