As my travel buzz keeps on a-buzzin' I find myself following more and more travel photography blogs each week. Sure, it's wanderlust mostly fueled by Instagram (currently digging Griffin Lamb) and the realisation that I haven't really visited that many countries in my near-30 year existence. But I know it will happen. In fact, me + Nik were talking about driving around Europe next year and documenting it for Buckets - that would make some cool travel diary right?!
I've been following Photographer Simone Anne's travel blog – We Are Adventure – for a while now. It serves as a constant source of inspiration and is perfect for saving destinations on Pinterest. I was lucky enough to catch up Simone, in which she took five minutes out of her work schedule to chat about her thoughts on travel, photography and her subjects.
Buckets + Spades - Tell us about how you approach your travel photography and what subjects really gets you going?
Simone Anne - The
way I see photography is as an experience. I've always been the kind of
person to "wear my heart on my sleeve," as they say. When things go
wonderfully, I'm the happiest ever, but when they aren't so wonderful, I
get pretty down over even the smallest thing. With anything I'm
photographing, I get completely into it in much the same way. With the
weddings I photograph, I find myself tearing up and emotional, even when
I don't personally know the family I work with outside of the
(wonderful) client relationship we have. For their wedding day, I am a
part of their family.
SA - My philosophy with travel photography is much the same: I get really really into it. I get up each morning wanting to explore where I am, meet and chat with as many locals as possible, sample as many foods as I can. It can be a little intense; I get anxiety if I'm not experiencing a place as much as I've deemed is humanely possible and I am definitely the traveler, even after months on the road, who sets an alarm every morning to make sure I get out and spend the whole entire day exploring.
I think this excitement shows through in my images. I'm not heading out there to create photos, but am rather heading out to explore a place and culture with my whole heart and soul. As somebody who expresses this love of the world through images, photography is a natural extension of that. I'm photographing the excitement I find in everything I see and do. My approach to travel is to throw myself into every aspect of it; my approach to life is to understand and share how I see the world through photography.

writing + photography is something I'm really keen to expand on through my career and for someone to share such in-depth details about how they
see their work is quite special, thank you. I
Oh my, these photographs are stunning. I'm keen to start getting out and about with my camera more.
ReplyDeleteThese are awesome! After reading the interview, you can really see what Simone means about capturing the excitement. I love how crisp the photos are.

Amazing amazing photographer. I would love to do travel posts and hoping that I get to do this properly at some point. I have hardly broken my tradition of Hong Kong every year but it might be broken next year...and would love to document it for the blog. These images are incredible and if you do manage to go driving around Europe next year, that would be insane!
ReplyDeleteFYI - Bird is really good! I like how you can order lots of different things. Stax is good but it does have a limited menu and you're right, it is pricey for what it is, but I'd still go back there. But....maybe not for a while seeing as there are just too many new eateries every time I go back to London. It's hard to keep up!

Those are some amazing photos! Interesting to read her thoughts on the process behind travel photography. Sometimes I wonder if the fact I'm taking so many photos when I travel means I'm not entirely living in the moment, but she manages to balance it.
ReplyDeleteAMAZING PHOTOS, I LOVE IT!

Stunning photographs. I've read her blog several of times and was always bowled over by her photographs and travel experiences. I'd love to travel and take photographs a lot but my current budget as well as committment to run my business won't allow me. I am still going on a week or fortnight's holidays as much as I can though, otherwise I'll go crazy! Aneurin and I are actually thinking about visiting someplace new after Christmas, hopefully that will happen. That Europe trip sounds exciting, we would really enjoy reading about them!

She's such a talent!
ReplyDeleteThese photos are wonderful and I have the blog ear marked for the weekend.
ReplyDeleteYou guys should totally travel around Europe a bit and take loads of pictures. My dream is to do an adventure touring moto trip 2016 or 2017 somewhere in Europe. Never even been on that side of the pond!
I love landscapes! Great photography
