Ever since I saw a large collection of old stamps on someone's blog (who was it, does anyone recall?) a couple of months back I've been scouring ebay in the hope of starting my own collection. There's certainly a lot on there so I decided to buy a couple of large unwanted collections. If you search right stamps are going seriously cheap on ebay, I picked up 200 (some used, stamped and dated, other in original condition) for around £1.50 with p+p. Some of them even have their original stamping dates on them, a few date back from before 1920 which is quite something. Best quid and a half I've spent this year.
I'm planning on picking my favourites out and framing them, they're just too good to be shoved in a photo album, never to be seen by anyone. When me and Hollie finally get around to sorting out a proper place together this is the first thing that's going up on the wall.
People would say stamps are the classic boring thing to collect but I don't agree, just look at them! They're fascinating. Big fan of the "Fire Pumper".
Sorry about the lack of posts of late, I'm pretty sure we're all in the same boat though right?
Having them framed sounds like a fantastic idea. I hope you had a lovely Christmas :)
ReplyDeletei love this collection, the orange background really brings out the different colours in the stamps, i use to be obsessed with collecting stamps haha!
ReplyDeleteAwesome collection, I find stamps fascinating too! x
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, I love stamps! There's a little shop in Preston (near the fishing shop!) that sells old stamps in bulk, I got a load for cheap for one of my projects at uni, I'd recommend there for a start.
ReplyDeleteHope you had a lovely Christmas Buckets!
Love Tweet xx
What a great collection! I was a big stap collector as a child but it's been ages since I've looked at my old stamp book - I must take a trip down memory lane!
ReplyDeleteJust an American stamp collection? surely the UK has interesting stamps too...
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna look in my house now that i'm here for the holidays, i remember someone used to have a large album with stamps from around the world. Also coins! Gonna find it and make a few bucks selling them to you! hahahah
ReplyDeleteIt is sort of true that stamps are a bit in that category of 'boring collectors item' but I totally see the appeal. What a marvellous find! If you're done with framing you should show pictures, I'd love to see how that worked out as it sounds pretty neat.
ReplyDeleteThat's such a great idea! Stamps are notoriously known as being the a boring collectible, but these look like a piece of artwork, great idea to get them framed!
ReplyDeleteThese stamps are awesome Mat. I can't believe how little you paid for them!

I tried stamp collecting as a kid but it was too fiddly for me. They are a piece of art though!
ReplyDeleteHappy 2013, Mat!
Philately - underrated. These will look amazing framed.
ReplyDeleteGood call on the Clarks. I'd love some at some point. All but two of my Asos bits went back but much fun was had trying everything on! Happy New Year.
wonderfully
ReplyDeleteBeen gone a while. Don't mean to ignore you. I hope you had a great new year and holidays. The stamp collection looks great! is Hollie into it as much as you are? I always fancy'd looney tunes stamps. Must agree, the fir pumper one is pretty rad. I'm also liking the one with the duck. All look great for considering how old they must be.
ReplyDeleteHopefully I can have some sort of info to post soon about the company. I'm really excited. Just got settled in back at my home in Texas. Things have been going great!
I've been thinking of it too! Well not so much a collection, but I wanted to frame a map of the world and create a border of stamps to fill the frame!
ReplyDeleteThey have amazing graphics. I like your idea to frame them. Happy New Year. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteI loooove old stamps. And new stamps! My great grandfather was a very avid collector, but I just enjoy the pieces of history and making envelopes look a little special :)
ReplyDeletemy grandmother has this humble collection of local stamps. she showed it to me when i was young and i marveled at it even if i couldn't understand why she was collecting them. now she has passed on the collection to my aunt. it's like a little treasure the family keeps even if it's not gold.
ReplyDeleteI agree, stamp collecting is great. My dad got me started a few years back and he's even promised to pass on his goods once I "settle down" and have my own house!
ReplyDeleteLove these! My father collects stamps and he keeps them in big albums.
ReplyDeleteFascinating that you actually saw it through by buying some for yourself! Stamp collecting is a hobby that if carefully looked pursued, can get you great investments.
