Here's something a bit different for a Saturday, a few weeks ago a couple of us took a trip to Blackpool Tower. A lot of you guys probably know that I live in Blackpool (for none British readers it's a seaside town based in the north west of England) and have done most of my life, but I have never been up to the top of the tower! Madness I know, I guess I just never got around to it.
Situated on the bottom floor of the Tower complex is the "world famous" Tower Ballroom, a dance hall build in the late 1890s by Frank Matcham. Along with some of the rooms in the Winter Gardens, it's one of the most beautiful dance halls I've ever seen and is truly iconic to the residence. We visited on a Thursday afternoon and it was great to see people still enjoying it for what it is. It's also where my Gran and Grandad met in the early 1950s, they were visiting on holidays respectively, fell in love and moved to Blackpool and lived happily ever after.
You can't beat a happy ending. Enjoy your weekend guys.

Ooh what an interesting place to visit! I have only ever seen it on Strictly Come Dancing I have to admit(!) but I'd love to go one day!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Blackpool and it's not that long away according to my friend. It's on our to do list for the future. She said she had a great time a few years back and only spent about a tenner which is good seeing as I always prefer to find fun stuff to do that doesn't cost a heck of a lot of dosh!
ReplyDeleteIt is a beautiful and very ornate place. I have been to Blackpool a few times mostly when I was at Uni in M/C but amazingly never went up the tower too. Have always loved watching ballroom dancing, used to watch it with my dad when I was really young - that and star trek - yes I know very disparate likes. He wont watch strictly now though thinks it has lost the magic that Come Dancing had. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteWow, this place is so pretty. I like that you have a story to go with it. I wonder if it looked the same when your grandparents went.
ReplyDeletethat is the cutest story...such a gorgeous place for a story like that to begin!
ReplyDeleteOh, what an amazing place and what a lovely story :)
ReplyDeletesweet story.. it's really awesome when you have a family story behind a place be it a park or a restaurant or a tower. it just makes the place 10 times more special.
