Skateboarding is one of those things that I wish I'd learnt when I had the chance, when I was youngster. I'd love nothing more than to cruise around the streets on a set of wheels, but I've gone past the age of where it's socially acceptable for me to be practicing outside the front of my house. I just can't be doing that at 26, slipping around while the 16 year old nearly pros wizz past wouldn't be a great look.
These skateboarding young'uns from 1960s New York make me very envious. In all serious though I think they're great, from what seems like such a carefree and exciting time. The innocence of being a kid and mucking about is something I'm sure we all miss. These really must have been an exciting time, when a new craze hits when you're a kid it's all you can think about, I'm looking at your Pogs, Rollerblades and Tamagotchi!
Which big crazes do you remember (and secretly what to take up again!) with found memories?

I too always wanted to be able to skateboard, and to rollerskate! But I never learnt so it's just not going to happen now, I'd look like such a prat... Maybe I'll get a Segway and "pretend".

This is wonderful and one of the reasons I love photography so much. The capturing of time in an image. I dont know if I have anything I miss I have always wanted to do cartwheels but have never managed one. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind me dragging these into my inspiration board..
ReplyDeleteAll these kids are too-cool-for-school.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos! Somehow skating in the 60s seems more stylish than now. I think I remember the yo-yo, the cubic square, roller blades...
ReplyDeleteI wish I learned to! These are REAL cool kids!
ReplyDeleteHoly sh*t, Batman, where did you get those photos? They're fabulous! I know these places: the last few are in Central Park: right down the street from where I lived, and I practically lived there.
ReplyDeleteI'm really bad with anything with wheels - anything that accelerates, really, so that includes skiing. What I like about swimming is that if I stop moving, I'm not likely to go crashing into the side of the pool. But what I do remember when I first moved to NY was roller blading: really cool people, a few years older than me but like another species, bravely flying around with little short shorts - very 80s - in bright, primary colours and perms.
I would consider taking that up: not again, but for the first time. In my next life.
So cool, wish I could skateboard. I really miss rollerblading haha! And to answer you question about the neon bracelet, I made it out of a belt! Super easy. Bet it works for guys as well!
ReplyDeleteI really want to learn to skateboard and I just went 25...I am well up for learning still. I would also like to learn to surf.
