Thinking About Colour

I was somewhat inspired by Carl Kleiner's work this morning and decided to mess around with some colour combinations. Nothing ground breaking of course but I thought it was quite a nice idea, it makes it easier to see good (and bad) colour combos. I'm think about painting the outside of our house you see, not that I'm going to go crazy but I wouldn't mind trying two different colours.

The warm weather screws up my wardrobe, I'm more of a cool weather kind of guy. I usually end up wearing a plain coloured t-shirt or shirt and jeans/trousers but I guess that's what works for me. It does leave my feeling pretty frustrated though.

How do you guys still manage to feel good about summery outfits? I'm probably thinking too much about it.

  1. brilliant! I like the triangle ones. I know exactly what you mean about summer clothes. My wardrobe is so blank, and I only add color w/layers & accessories. It's too hot here during summer for either of those.

  2. I love the pink and green!

  3. Oh, this is nice. I definitely like the third one!

  4. great color combos, it's interesting how pairing them in certain ways such as patterns and angles can set off different moods. They look awesome!

A big reason why I bought some colored socks was to be able to add a little bit of flare to a normal summer outfit. I'm looking forward to messing with different colored socks and shirts to create something a bit more interesting. I'm also a fan of straw trilby hats and I think they are an essential for dressing up summer outfits.

  5. it's funny you put it that way, i'm an islander and i find it impossible to look good or find decent winter/cool weather clothes! for an entire season i'm actually a bit of a slob and cannot wait for summer to kick in! i would say 99% of my clothes is composed of shorts, tees and flip-flops. guys can totally pull off summer outfits. don't you love less layers, thin cloths, and warm sun on your skin? x

I've still worn jeans this week, I can't help it, I just feel so much more comfortable wearing them now I've gotten into a habbit. I enjoy warm weather but not excessive, I'd choose cold over warm anyday! ...but not tooo cold of course!

I like these colour combo's, very nice idea. They would look great as paintings!

  8. i think there's no particular need for colour - I'd prefer black and grey's over everything.

  12. I find thinkin about colour combinations quite difficult. I can never decide if I love a colour combination or hate it! I think you can get better at everything with pracice though - and I like the idea of putting colours together in this way to help train your eye!

  15. Mmm... hypnotic.

I find shorts & a t-shirt boring but as long as it is scorching hot I'm willing to overlook the boredom!

  16. Super combinations, Mat. I can break my head of colours and people who think outside the classical colour box (e.g. Marni, Haider Ackermann, to name 2 fashion houses) never cease to amaze me.

  17. Love the last one, the pastels are subtle and summery! I hate dressing for new seasons - I basically wear the same clothes only less of them, ha ♥ Claire @ Jazzpad

  18. Absolutely love these colour combinations Mat! Really beautiful and seriously inspiring!

Painting the outside of the house?! Ooo, la la! This sounds like such a good summer project.t Please show a before and after?

p.s. I find simple outfits in the summer are best - so it's really the little details and quality that make all the difference. xx

  19. These are rather lovely. You should check out um, I can't remember the name dammit! Some quite high end paint people do these amazing look books every time they release new colours... opps.

It's frustrating, it takes me a while to get into summer dressing & then it's cold again! Being confined to t-shirts for guys must be hard. Maybe try playing with colour, or different fabrics?

  20. Ooooh I like! Painting outside the house sounds so exciting, don't you think it's weird that not many people bother to do this (at least not where I live). I'm SO going to paint my house yellow with a red roof and blue doors.

One thing I struggle with during the summer is dressing appropriately for indoors, as I am in the lab/office most of the day and it gets annoyingly hot. The office is like a confused oven with furniture. x

The top blue and yellow combo (although probably unsuitable for a house)reminds me of Charlotte Taylor's collection from last year with the penguin print scarves etc. As to house colours, I'd probs go for the fourth down - it's a bit more muted but still a little different. With you on the weather conundrum - I've been going for summer dresses but with bright (if woollen) tights and cardigans and bright headscarves. Since that boiling blip last week it seems we're all reluctant to go back to the winter stuff! Why not go for yellow chinos or something with bright shoes (im thinking red or blue) and an aran knit jumper? Use this time of uncertainty to mess around with your styling! Thanks for your comment by the way, we are definitely a pair of Clarks fans!

  22. Love these colour combinations, what colours are you think of using? Don't you think it's weird that no one really bothers to paint the outside of their house-or at least not where I live.

During the summer, my office is no longer an office, it's a confused oven with furniture and so I always struggle to dress appropriately for work.

  24. The blue and yellow looks fantastic together. I really like winter and autumn, I enjoy dressing for those months but when summer roles round I am ready for a change and have been craving pastel and bright colours. Yellow and blue is actually one of my top 5 colour combinations and I think it really puts you in a good mood.

  26. I´m totally in love with your blog!
About this post... I recently opened a bar, and I had to decide its colors. I´m a graphic designer and I work with colors schemes every day, but nothing was harder than deciding on a color combo for the outside of the house!! I used to make this exact same exercise to practice. So many good memories!
    Besos!! (Will definitely follow!)

  27. This made my eyes happy! The second one is pretty much the colours of my old kitchen. The green was pistachio I think, and that's what I did the walls in.

I'm catching up with all the blog posts, can you tell?! I never go on the computer now i've got my iphone (hence why I never post in my own blog either!)
