I have quite a bit of spare time at the moment so I'm finally getting round to looking through the dusty pile-o-books in the corner of my room. It's been a while since I did a post on architecture so I thought I'd share some of my favourites which featured in a book Hollie bought me for Christmas. I've tired to pick out a few that aren't as commonly know, as well as me not knowing them before I flicked through this mountainous book.
I don't really have a strict criteria but I'm usually attracted to harsh, angled, shapely, just something a bit different I guess. All failing that anything in a Brutalist style I'm bound to like, the Barbican Estate being a perfect example for all you London folk. The last one may seem a bit of a weird choice but I wanted to include it as I went to uni in Preston and I'm pretty certain 99% of the people there don't realise how cool their bus station is!
I'm also working on an illustration at the moment, it's been a while since I did one so it feels great getting stuck in. In fact it was probably early last year. I'll post it once it's finished, nearly there.
Click on the name of the building for the original source.

When I was 18 I didn't think much of Gaudi but now that I'm 23 he's in my top three favourite architects. His Casa Batllo is beautiful and some parts are how imagine the inside of the Captain Ahab's Nautilus would be but I unfortunately never got to see the roof of Casa Mila. My aunt took one look at the block-long line and said no! :))
ReplyDeleteCasa Mila has always been a favorite of mine. The bus station is pretty cool too!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read this I was gaping at all the wonderful places you'd visited! Now ofc I realise they're other's photographs, but I reckon you should make a pictorial to-go list. Would be a pretty awesome adventure x
ReplyDelete*sigh*, the Casa Mila. I've had a postcard of this for ages - I don't know anything about this style of architecture but I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of that bus station! Newport train station has a similar vibe :)
ReplyDeleteAhh it's refreshing to have some architecture on my feed. I feel inspired to buy a book on it ! I like the New York building, reminds me of all the fire escape scenes in movies. Molly

ReplyDeletelove the first and last ones.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of the Einstein Tower in Germany, wow. The shape sort of reminds me of a boot!
ReplyDeleteThe only building we have near me is the Birmingham Bull Ring, it's pretty groovy but I'm more attracted to traditional sort of buildings!
You should post some more if you have time, and really looking forward to your illustration!
No matter if it's Bauhaus style or the rounded Gaudi lines... These buildings stand for themself. And yes, the Preston station is pretty cool. Spacy.
ReplyDeleteGo Preston Bus station! I have always wanted to see the Casa Mila. xx
ReplyDeleteI saw the Casa Mila (also called La Pedrera)in Barcelona recently and it was amazing - I recommend going in the late afternoon/early evening because the shadows on the rooftop are beautiful. Of course that was when my camera suddenly decided to run out of battery!
