I stumbled upon Stephen Walter's work when I was searching the internet for world map's, which I'm going to have on the wall in my new bedroom(when I finally finish decorating). I discovered his work at and so say I. I've always had a fascination with geology, and maps come along with that.

Walter experiments with pencil sketches, mixed media and photography, sometimes combining all those elements. He messes around with things that can trick the eye at first glance, forcing the viewer to take a second look. All is not what it seems. I just love it.

The piece named, "There Must be a Wilderness Out There, Somewhere" is actually a photograph with has been layered up with acrylic paint and along with Hub, is one of my favourite. If you visit Stephen Walter's website you can see close-up detail shots of each piece of his work. I suggest you all zoom into some of his map work, the intricate detail is just amazing. As always, well I see sometime I like I will have to have a go myself.

I'll leave you with a little lost alien guy that landed on my desktop;

Anyone want to name him?

  3. His work really is amazing, very illustrative for mass-ification and consumerism. I especially like the drawings, the details really are something! 'There must be a wilderness out there, somewhere' is an excellent, and quite innovative (or at least for me), example of mixed media. It's all very inspirational. You're little alien's quite cute too, reminds me of Stings 'Alien in New York' :)

  14. You have amazing taste. What a great artist! That's so much for sharing. & I would say I could see if I could get you a £1 map from work but I think we sent them back...sorry!

    The alien looks like a Norman to me. But would an alien really be called Norman? Sounds a bit human to me...

  20. Such a sense of breadth and scope in all of these: I especially like the one with the island because it's similar to my favourite artist of all time, Zdzislaw Beksinski. Great shout!
